The uvea is a layer of tissue beneath the white of the eye (sclera). It has three parts: the iris, which is the colored part of the eye; the choroid layer, which is the layer of blood vessels and connective tissue between the sclera and the retina; and the ciliary body, which secretes the transparent liquid (aqueous humor) into the eye.
There are wide varieties of reasons which may cause uveitis. It may range from autoimmune disorders to infections to unknown reasons.
Patients commonly experiences intermittent attacks of redness, pain and increased sensitivity to sunlight, decrease in vision.
As uveitis is associated with other systemic conditions; eye specialist
consults with other specialty doctors like chest physicians,
rheumatologists, pathologist, and radiologists to investigate and treat
this condition in best possible manner. For finding a cause; blood
investigations and sometimes x-ray, CT scans are necessary. Sometimes,
systemic drugs like steroids are necessary to treat.
Uveitis can be recurrent; therefore proper follow up of patient is
necessary. Long duration of uveitis may lead to cataract and increased
intraocular pressure and macular (part of retina) oedema. Therefore;
timely treatment by eye specialist is mandatory.
